Welcome back to Waiting on the Trade, a monthly comics book club for people who don’t have time for monthly comics!
In this episode, guest host Tyler Marifke makes pizza his business, as we discuss Matt Fraction, David Aja, Steve Lieber, Jesse Hamm, Matt Hollingsworth, and Francesco Francavilla’s Hawkeye: Little Hits.
This episode’s explanations, observations, and links of note include:
- Finally, a chance to talk about Heroclix! If you’re into miniature games at all, I’d highly recommend ‘Clix. Games are fast-paced and fun, and you can get started pretty easily.
- If you’re looking to read Tyler’s “first comic,” here’s a link to the start of Jason Aaron’s Ghost Rider run.
- Kate Bishop is the best Hawkeye. I will die on this hill. I am SO excited that she’s going to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
- ‘Pizza Is My Business’ definitely won an Eisner, and it definitely deserved it! And some of the proceeds from issue 7 definitely did go to the Red Cross.
- I think we do a pretty good job of breaking down Hawkeye’s comic book history within the episode itself, but here’s a Wikipedia link in case you want to go even deeper.
- Here’s that Matt Fraction/Kelly Sue DeConnick interview I mentioned in the episode. Fraction’s writing method is so bizarre to me, but hey, it works! I also identify with Kelly Sue’s non-visual thinking.
- I do think this series rewards being read all at once, so you might want to go out of your way to find the Omnibus Edition if you’re just getting in to Hawkeye. It might solve some of the first-time-reader issues that Pat had with this volume.
Follow-Up Recommendations
If you liked Hawkeye, we think you might also like:
- Kelly Thompson’s follow-up series starring Kate Bishop (which I wrote a bit about here).
- Gillen and McKelvie’s Young Avengers.
- Hawkeye Vs. Deadpool.
- Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo’s Doctor Strange. (And really, Tyler will tell you to read all of Jason Aaron’s Marvel books.)
