Codename: Sailor V Vol. 1

Welcome back to Waiting on the Trade, a monthly comics book club for people who don’t have time for monthly comics!

In this episode, guest host Suzanne Payne helps us dive into the world of the Sailor Scouts, as we discuss the first volume of Naoko Takeuchi’s Codename: Sailor V.

This episode’s explanations, observations, and links of note include:

  • The Sailor Moon wiki has a pretty good rundown of Sailor V‘s connection to Sailor Moon, as well as a timeline of why and how the two series ended up overlapping. Also, this article does a good job of comparing the characters of Sailor V and Sailor Moon.
  • I am entirely convinced that Sailor Moon is the Japanese equivalent of 90s-and-forward X-Men. Sailor Scout lore is just as complicated and wild as X-lore. I love it.
  • Pat tracked down this explanation of manga and anime’s “swirly eyes = nerd with glasses” trope.
  • There is no org chart for the Dark Agency … yet. Sailor V fans, get on that! (Also, I assume the Dark Agency would all be contained within the Dark Kingdom? The org chart expands …)
